Every weekend the Latin quarter of Madrid becomes one of the meeting places for many locals and visitors who meet there to enjoy a “tapita” or a glass of wine in one of the many bars and restaurants of the area. In La Latina are many traditional and very special taverns which have become famous in the capital for their excellent finger food.

Even though there are taverns through out the zone, the majority of the establishments can be found around Cava Baja and Cava Alta streets and in la Cebada and La Paja squares.

These areas come alive during the weekends and in particular on Sunday when there is a market in the nearby streets.  It is almost a religion to go to the Latin quarter to enjoy a vermouth while watching the world go by.  A custom that in Madrid fills up the bars and terraces in the Latin quarter every Sunday morning.

El Tempranillo (Cava Baja 30) is one of the places that every weekend attracts a multitude of people.  It is a small tavern with an extensive wine list to accompany their delicious tapas.

Also, there is Casa Lucas (Cava Baja 30), a small bar with a creative tapas menu, using quality produce and a careful selection of wines to caress all the senses.

In the Latin quarter can also be found Txirimiri (Calle del Humilladero 6) and Juana la Loca

(Plaza de Puerta de los Moros 4).  Both of these places have something in common, the best potato omelettes in the capital.  The story is that the owner of Txirimiri worked at Juana La Loca and taught them the secret of how to make their wonderful potato omelette, perfect with confit onion.  Apart from the rumours it is true that both of them are exceptional and seduce anybody who samples them.

The Plaza de Humilladero is another of the areas where you find establishments offering tapas in the Latin quarter.  Located there is Bonanno (number 4) where it is normal to see people queuing every weekend to buy some of their succulent tapas or a beer.

If you are visiting the capital we recommend that you stay at one of the hotels of Petit Palace in Madrid, from where you can travel easily to many of the emblematic places in the capital such as Plaza Mayor.
