Whether it be a first visit or a new journey no one who spends time visiting Seville will fail to admire the culture and the very clear reminiscences of the Arabic world.
With both a brutal and disputable historical past, Seville was more than just a jewel of the Andalusian culture, it was the capital of the reign of Al-Andalus when the “almohades” (a religious movement from north Africa) occupied the city. A place that Washington Irving fell in love with for this reason and many others and which offers a highly recommended Andalusian route much more than the Reales Alcazares or a visit to the Giralda. Just a 10 minute walk from the Petit Palace Santa Cruz you will find the Salvador Church, one of the most relevant temples in the city and an antique mosque when Seville still responded to the name of Ishbilia… A detail that many (the great majority) are not aware of but it forms part of the Andalusian side of the city. If you visit the area you should walk through the streets of Cordoba, Puente and Penon or Alcaiceria because these were the principal arteries when the mosque was built around the year 870.
The walls of Seville
A detail unknown by the majority of tourists who visit Seville is the fact that it is a walled city and of that building there are remains perfectly conserved. Remains which date back from 11th century and form a part of the 7,300 metres of wall constructed by the Almoravides and Almohades to protect the capital. Where can you find them? Next to the Reales Alcazares (in the posterior part of the hotel Petit Palace Marques Santa Ana, in the Barrio de Arenal, in the Avenida de la Constitución and in the area of the Macarena.
This was the film set for the shooting of the film Kingdom of Heaven (starring the Hollywood actors Liam Nesson, Eva Green and Orlando Bloom and it is also one of the most beautiful Andalusian temples.
