There are many festive occasions that happen in Madrid motivated by the festival of the Virgin of Pilar. Apart from being a great day for Spain (it is the Hispanic day), this year’s long weekend of 12th October, is enjoyed with rhythm, music and lots of life.
If you have never experienced autumn in Madrid, this is the perfect moment to look for adventure and join the Fiestas del Pilar just like one of the locals, and make the most of one of those flash deals you enjoy so much.
A curiosity are the military parades which pass by the principal avenues in Madrid (with a visit of the Royal family included). The main avenue is the majestic Paseo de la Castellana.
If you want something even more authentic, go to the Fiestas of the Barrio del Pilar. Local fairs made in Spain that start on 9th October and last up to the early hours of morning of 12th. Three and a half days of music, typical dishes, great people and lots of local atmosphere.
Famous for being the location of La Vaguada, the first commercial centre that opened in Spain in the 80’s, the Barrio del Pilar is tranquil place, genuine, and representative of Madrid but also away from the frantic pace that characterizes the city. A calmness that disappears when the Puente del Pilar approaches.
What will you find at the Fiestas del Barrio del Pilar in Madrid? Dance recitals, exhibitions, activities for youngsters, sporting events, concerts by well known artists and local orchestras, lots of booths and excellent gastronomy. Everything can be found at the official fairground, the La Vaguada sports arenas called Vicente del Bosque and La Maso and the Cultural Centre La Vaguada and North Park.
Our recommendation is for at least one day you enjoy the “Day’s Gala” and you take a walk around the Fiestas del Barrio del Pilar when the sun is high in the sky and both grown ups and kids take to the streets. Colourful, diverse and with authentic character, all in the same place. Without a doubt the best option for an unbeatable getaway.
